It’s Leap Year so today I am sharing with you a resource to help teach your students all about it.
We begin teaching about Leap Year by watching Brain Pop Jr. This gives great background information on the calendar and Leap Day. Next, we read the book from the Leap Day pack.
I love this book because it explains Leap Year in a way our littlest students can understand.
After reading the book, we dive into activities. This pack has tons of them! There are reading responses, calendar and math activities, and a STEM project. In 1st grade, reviewing calendar skills is important. You can focus on skills for the month of February. Students create a calendar for the month of February with their own calendar template and add Leap Day on the 29th.
What if your birthday was on February 29th? First graders get VERY interested in this concept. They find it so funny that someone their age born on February 29th would only be one.
Students can get very creative when they write about what they would do on the extra day. It only happens every four years so we need to take advantage of it.
STEM is highly engaging and the activity included in this resource will be the highlight of your students’ day! We love to end the day seeing which frog can leap the farthest!
If you are looking for something to do with your first graders, go check out this resource! Let me know what you think.
Now it’s time for you to decide what you are going to do with your extra day. I hope you choose something just for YOU.
