Description
These NO PREP word chain lists and activities will help kindergarten, first and second grade students master phonics skills and become better encoders. Word chains (or word ladders) are a way to infuse phonemic awareness and phonics. It allows students to understand if they can spell one word, they can use part of it to spell new words.
Word chains can be done whole group, small group, 1:1, and even as literacy centers, Typically, I use letter cards and have one student change the cards while the rest are writing on whiteboards.
Word chains promote orthographic mapping. Students must pay attention to every phoneme, and hear the change, to make the new word.
