Every
primary teacher knows how important sight words are to beginning readers. When many of these words show up
in our reading material, all phonics instruction gets thrown out the window because the majority of these words do not follow phonics rules. You just have to know these words by sight.

Did you know that the first 25 Dolch words make up
approximately a third of all written material?
The first 100 and 300 words make up about 50%
and 65% of all
printed material!

Hands on practice with sight
words is key.

Taking a kinesthetic approach
to sight words is going to fit a lot of students’ learning style. Have them make words with sand, Legos, salt, play
dough, blocks or shaving cream.

But we need more than that. That’s why I created Sight Word Centers.
Besides independent sight word
work, it is important to have direct instruction on sight words. I use my sight word books to do this. I love the sight
word books because they are interactive.
Students get to make and break sight words, write them in the book, and
then put the cut-up sentences in the same order as the book.

We also practice sight words at
work stations. I created these tic tac toe boards to help my student’s learn
sight words. Choice is inherent in this
resource, so students are super engaged.
I have two packs using Dolch Words
and two that are editable so you can add your own words and use in any grade.
