We usually begin our spring unit by brainstorming all of the things that happen in the spring and charting them. We read tons of picture books about spring to build our background knowledge.
After a long winter, my spring banners always brighten up the classroom. Students write about what happens in spring. They decorate the banner and choose a topper. These are super easy to implement and look great!
Once we have built our background knowledge about spring, it’s time to dive into spring learning. First, we read nonfiction texts about spring animals. I have a great pack about different animals including rabbits, lions, lamb, ducklings, chickens, piglets, bear cubs, swan, foal, deer fawn, beaver, cow calves, goslings, baby fox, and raccoon. Here is the link if you are interested.
Spring is also a time of change for our students. Our first graders have matured quite a bit from the start of the year and can be independent learners for a longer amount of time. It is so exciting to see! Math games are always fun, but this time of year is easy because of their newfound independence. My spring math games are easy-peasy. Just print, add dice or a paperclip and use. I pull out my spring Target mini erasers to use with the games and my first graders love it!
This is the time of year when first graders writing really takes off. My students have practiced opinions, informative and narrative writing all year long and are good at it. I love to throw in creative writing because I feel like that is an area all students can shine and I tend to get gobs of quality work. My firsties especially love my Spring Writing Toppers activities because they have a choice and it includes art.
I hope this blog post gave you some great ideas on what to do with your first graders this spring. Pin either photo below so you can save this post to come back to it.
