Back to School Night is a time to let families know all about their student’s new classroom. It can be a stressful time because you want to come across as professional and nurturing. I don’t know about you but I can talk in front of 100 students like it’s nobody’s business but once you put parents in the room, I feel like a blubbering fool. My mind races and I forget the most obvious things. So, it’s very important that I prepare and practice.
Back to School Night is a way to nurture relationships, ensure families know expectations, and communicate about the school year.
Back to School night is a great way to provide a more detailed introduction and further a personal connection. I want families to understand there’s more to me than being a teacher.
It’s extremely important to provide parents and students with your classroom rules, procedures, and expectations during Curriculum Night. I am presenting a slideshow during Back to School Night. The nice thing about this slideshow is that you can save it as a pdf and print it or email it to parents before or after Back to School Night.
When inviting parents to Back to School night, I will email the invitation. I will also attach a flip book for families to peruse prior to the meeting. The flip book I am using puts everything right at their fingertips. Since all families mosst likely will not be able to attend, I suggest using a digital version like this one here. You can customize this editable flip book to fit your needs. It’s also available to print.
Be sure to leave time at the end of your presentation for questions. Families tend to have questions and one person’s question can make someone else think of a follow-up question.
If you think through all the information you want parents to know using these tools, Back to School Night should be a breeze!
